The Bayon Temple has two special features among its many attractions. By far the most amazing is the carved heads which are everywhere. Over 200 large faces are carved on the four sides of 54 towers which top this temple. The faces appear to be the same person. The overall effect is haunting and erie. The second attraction is the extensive carved bas-relief murals depecting many aspects of normal life, as well as the more typical scenes of historical battles and processions.
The main entrance is on this, the east side. A large courtyard leads to a formal entrance guarded by two headless statues. Immediately inside the entrance the walls to either side contain the bas-relief murals that circle the entire temple on two levels.
